Pokémon Champions opens mobile pre-registration and puts competitive battles back in focus

Pokémon Champions is the biggest pre-registration story of 3 June because it looks like The Pokémon Company wants a cleaner competitive battle experience on mobile rather than another walking, collecting or puzzle-side project. The game is now open for iOS pre-registration, with Android details still pending, and the pitch is all about building teams, using familiar Pokémon battle mechanics and taking on trainers worldwide.

Ranked Battles and Casual Battles give it an obvious split between serious players and people who just want to test teams without emotional damage. The Pokémon HOME connection could also be important because it lets players use certain Pokémon they have already befriended elsewhere, giving the game a stronger ecosystem hook. The big question is how approachable the competitive structure will be on phones.

If it keeps battles tactical without making onboarding painful, Pokémon Champions could become one of the most important mobile strategy launches of the summer.
