Google explains Play Store fee changes and Level Up program

Google has explained more of its new Play Store fee structure and Level Up program, which is the sort of industry story that sounds dry until you remember every percentage point can mean serious money for mobile developers. The changes started in the US, EU and UK on June 30, with other regions following later.

The structure gives developers more options around payment providers and rewards teams that invest in cross-device experiences through Level Up. It is not exactly the victory parade some wanted after years of store-fee arguments, but it is progress. For mobile game makers, especially mid-sized studios, the details matter because monetisation, acquisition and platform rules all live in the same expensive sandwich.
