Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 reaches general availability with wider tablet-like design

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 reaches general availability today, August 7, introducing a noticeably different form factor from the company's previous book-style foldables. Rather than using the tall proportions associated with earlier Galaxy Z Fold models, the Fold8 opens into a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio intended to feel closer to a compact tablet. Samsung says the wider shape improves reading, browsing, gaming and split-screen use while reducing unused space in many content-focused applications.

The device weighs 201 grams, making it Samsung's lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet, and uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. A 4,800mAh battery supports 45W wired charging, while the camera system includes dual 50MP wide and ultra-wide sensors. The Fold8 starts at $1,899.99 in the United States, with 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage options.

For mobile gaming, the unusual display ratio is potentially more important than raw processor performance because it provides a larger, more balanced play area without requiring an eight-inch tablet. Today's retail release also begins a new three-device foldable strategy for Samsung, with the Fold8 positioned below the more expensive Fold8 Ultra rather than acting as the company's single flagship book-style model.
