Dungeons of Hinterberg has made the jump to iOS and Android, bringing its unusual blend of action role-playing, social simulation and Alpine tourism to mobile devices. Players take the role of Luisa, a young professional who escapes the pressures of everyday life by travelling to the Austrian mountain town of Hinterberg, where magical dungeons have suddenly become a tourist attraction.
The game contains 25 dungeons spread across several visually distinct regions, each combining combat, traversal and environmental puzzles. Outside the dungeons, Luisa can explore the town, meet residents and other adventurers, build relationships and choose how to spend her evenings. Those social connections can unlock useful abilities and equipment, meaning downtime is closely tied to progression.
The colourful art direction gives Hinterberg a strong identity compared with the darker fantasy worlds common to action RPGs. Mobile controls have the difficult task of handling sword combat, magic and exploration without covering too much of the screen, but the release gives phone and tablet users access to a substantial game previously associated with PC and console.
Its mixture of holiday atmosphere and monster hunting makes Dungeons of Hinterberg an appealing option for players who want more narrative and character interaction than a conventional dungeon crawler usually provides.
