Konami has officially launched Suikoden STAR LEAP in Japan on iOS and Android, marking the first entry in the long-running role-playing series designed specifically around mobile devices. The new game is free to play with in-game purchases and uses detailed pixel art to preserve the visual character associated with earlier Suikoden titles. Its story takes place in Solar Year 453 after a mysterious attack devastates a lakeside village east of the Scarlet Moon Empire.
The protagonist joins Hisui, Shirin and Shapur in rebuilding the settlement before becoming caught in a wider political conflict involving the Rune of Change, one of the world's 27 True Runes. Long-time fans will also encounter familiar figures such as Viktor, Flik and Odessa. As with earlier games in the franchise, recruitment plays a major role, with 108 new Stars available to meet and befriend.
Konami lists iOS, Android and Steam as supported platforms, although today's launch is focused on Japan and international timing remains less clear. STAR LEAP has a difficult balance to strike: it must work as a modern free-to-play mobile RPG while retaining the ensemble storytelling, political themes and character recruitment that made Suikoden distinctive.
