Foundations of Digital Games 2026 begins today, August 10, at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen and runs through August 13. The conference brings together researchers and practitioners examining how games are designed, experienced and understood, covering subjects that extend across mobile, PC, console and emerging interactive platforms.
Academic events rarely generate the immediate headlines associated with a major product launch, but they can influence the longer-term direction of development by bringing together work on artificial intelligence, accessibility, player behaviour, education, procedural design and human-computer interaction. Mobile gaming is particularly relevant because phones provide enormous player populations and a wide variety of input, monetisation and social systems for researchers to study.
Findings developed in academic settings can eventually affect practical areas such as onboarding, interface design and methods for evaluating player experience. The August 10 opening also underlines how broad the modern games ecosystem has become. Commercial studios, universities, technology providers and platform holders increasingly overlap in areas such as AI and user research.
For developers, the conference is therefore less about announcing one new game and more about exploring the tools and ideas that may shape future releases across the industry.
