Samsung's newly announced ISOCELL HPC is a 200MP smartphone camera sensor that attempts to improve the quality of each captured pixel rather than relying on resolution alone. The sensor introduces Samsung's DeepPix architecture, using Front Deep Trench Isolation to increase Full Well Capacity by around 60 percent compared with the previous generation. In practical terms, greater capacity allows pixels to hold more light information before highlights clip, improving dynamic range and low-light imaging.
Samsung also supports single-frame 16-bit HDR and maintains HDR across several in-sensor zoom levels. That could make the sensor particularly useful in phones that rely heavily on high-resolution cropping for intermediate zoom positions. The ISOCELL HPC uses a 1/1.3-inch optical format with 0.6-micrometre pixels. No specific smartphone has yet been confirmed as the first commercial device to use it, so consumers should avoid assuming it will appear in the next Galaxy flagship.
Camera quality also depends heavily on lenses and image processing. Still, the HPC indicates where smartphone imaging is heading: the industry is moving beyond simply advertising 200MP and toward using high-resolution sensors to improve HDR, zoom and video quality.
