Android 17 App Lock testing points toward system-level protection for individual apps

Google is testing a native App Lock feature in an Android Canary build, potentially giving users a consistent system-level way to protect selected applications with a PIN, password or biometric authentication. Some Android manufacturers already provide similar tools, but a Google implementation could standardise the experience across a wider range of devices.

The current testing reportedly allows users to select multiple applications for protection, which is useful for banking, messaging, photos or work software on a phone that may occasionally be handed to another person. App Lock is particularly relevant as smartphones hold more sensitive data even after the main lock screen has been passed. A user might be comfortable allowing a family member to make a call while still wanting finance or private-message apps protected.

The feature remains in development, so Google could modify its interface or rollout plans before it reaches stable Android releases. Native support would also reduce dependence on third-party utilities that may request broad permissions. For gaming users, App Lock could be useful for protecting accounts or preventing children from opening games with in-app purchases. The test shows Android 17 continuing to add practical privacy controls beyond headline visual changes.
