REDMI's newly launched global REDMI 17 and REDMI 17 5G continue the smartphone industry's rapid move toward much larger batteries. Both models use 7,500mAh cells with 45W wired charging and large 6.9-inch displays capable of refresh rates up to 120Hz. The 5G version uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, while the 4G model relies on MediaTek's Helio G91-Ultra.

Those processors target mainstream use rather than flagship gaming, but the enormous battery capacity makes the phones particularly relevant to users who spend hours streaming, navigating or playing lighter mobile games. High battery capacity can matter more than peak performance in markets where users rely on one phone as their main entertainment device and may not have frequent access to charging.

The 120Hz displays also improve everyday smoothness even when demanding games cannot run at similarly high frame rates. REDMI's launch shows how quickly hardware once associated with specialist gaming phones is moving down the price ladder. As battery technology becomes denser, manufacturers can add capacity without making devices as thick and heavy as earlier high-endurance models. That should benefit the entire affordable Android segment.
