Netflix prepares to close Night School and Moonloot as its games strategy shifts again

Netflix is preparing to close two more internal game studios as it continues reshaping its gaming strategy. Los Angeles-based Night School Studio and Helsinki-based Moonloot are both expected to shut down, while additional roles inside Netflix's internal games organisation are also being reduced. Night School joined Netflix in 2021 and is known for narrative titles, while Moonloot was established in Helsinki in 2022.

The closures arrive as Netflix moves away from its earlier mobile-first approach and places greater emphasis on games that can be streamed to televisions and PCs, often using a smartphone as the controller. The company says its current priorities include children's games, party experiences, story-driven projects and titles with broad mainstream appeal. Netflix has already closed Team Blue and Boss Fight while selling cosy developer Spry Fox back to its founders.

The strategic change shows how difficult subscription gaming has been to define even for a company with hundreds of millions of entertainment customers. Netflix is not abandoning games entirely, but it is becoming more selective about the types of projects it funds internally. For mobile developers, the latest closures are another reminder that platform strategies can change quickly even after acquisitions and major investment.
