Quick Share gains tap-to-share on compatible Pixel devices

Google is simplifying nearby sharing between Pixel devices with a new tap-to-share capability integrated into Quick Share. Eligible devices can physically tap together to initiate transfer of contact information, photos, videos and other supported content. The idea is to reduce the number of menus required when two people are standing next to one another and already know which devices they want to connect.

Android has experimented with proximity-based sharing in several forms over the years, but Quick Share has become Google's central cross-device system after merging earlier Nearby Share functionality. The new feature launches first on Pixel hardware and could eventually provide a reference implementation for other Android manufacturers.

Simple device-to-device transfer matters to gaming users too, particularly for sharing screenshots, clips, login information or files without uploading them to a cloud service first. Google is increasingly using Pixel as a showcase for Android ecosystem behaviour rather than keeping every new capability exclusive forever. Tap-to-share also fits the wider Pixel 11 theme of making routine interactions require fewer explicit steps.

Whether the feature becomes widely useful will depend on support across enough Android phones rather than remaining something only two recent Pixels can use together.
