Model numbers believed to belong to Sony's next Xperia 1 flagship have appeared in an IMEI database, providing early evidence that development of an Xperia 1 IX is underway. Regulatory listings reveal very little about actual hardware, so processor, camera and launch-date claims remain speculative. The more important news is that Sony appears to be continuing its high-end Android smartphone line despite occupying a far smaller global market share than Samsung, Google or the largest Chinese manufacturers.

Xperia devices appeal to a specialised audience through manual photography controls, multimedia features and design choices influenced by Sony's camera and entertainment divisions.
