Google's HiLight notification system is emerging as one of the most discussed additions to Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL during the first hands-on period. The system uses coloured illumination integrated around the rear camera area to communicate alerts while the phone is face-down or otherwise not showing its screen. Users can associate different colours with contacts or notification types, effectively reviving the glanceable notification LED in a much more visible form.

Modern smartphones largely abandoned dedicated LEDs as bezels disappeared and always-on displays became common, but many users still miss the ability to identify an alert without waking the screen. HiLight therefore feels simultaneously new and nostalgic. Google pairs the feature with Tensor G6, brighter Super Actua displays and upgraded cameras across the Pro range.

Its actual usefulness will depend on customisation and whether developers or system services can make consistent use of the light without creating another source of distraction. The Pro models are also substantially more expensive this year, putting pressure on smaller quality-of-life additions to justify the increase. HiLight may not transform smartphones, but it gives Google's otherwise conservative hardware design a recognisable personality.
