Google's HiLight system remains one of the most distinctive hardware additions on the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL as the phones approach their August 20 retail release. Instead of relying exclusively on the always-on display, HiLight places configurable coloured illumination around the rear camera area. That allows users to recognise certain alerts even when a phone is lying face-down.

Dedicated notification LEDs were once common on Android devices but largely disappeared as manufacturers reduced bezels and increased dependence on always-on screens. Google's approach effectively brings the idea back in a more visually prominent form. Users can associate colours and behaviours with different notifications, although the real value will depend on how much control Google provides without turning the lighting into another source of distraction.

HiLight is limited to the Pro models rather than the standard Pixel 11. The feature arrives alongside Tensor G6, brighter displays and upgraded camera hardware. It will not determine smartphone performance, but small glanceable interactions often influence everyday satisfaction more than benchmark improvements. HiLight gives Google's otherwise restrained Pixel design a recognisable piece of hardware personality.
