Nitelore is coming out of its first launch weekend on iPhone and iPad after debuting on August 15. Crabware's futuristic racer offers Grand Prix, Elimination, Death Race and Time Attack modes, combining high-speed hovercraft with neon cities, lunar landscapes and other exaggerated science-fiction tracks. The game's biggest strength is simply occupying a space that modern mobile racing frequently ignores.

Most major smartphone racers revolve around licensed cars, collection economies and lengthy upgrade systems, while Nitelore focuses more directly on arcade speed and track mastery. Players can use touchscreen, tilt or compatible controllers, providing several ways to solve the difficult problem of steering accurately at high speed on a phone. Launch weekend feedback will be particularly valuable because racers need consistent frame rates and low input latency to feel fair.

Nitelore is unlikely to compete with the scale of the largest free-to-play racing franchises, but that is not necessarily the goal. For users who miss the anti-gravity style once common on consoles and handhelds, its first weekend shows there is still room for smaller premium-minded racing games on mobile.
