Android 17 native App Lock remains in testing as Google works toward more consistent privacy controls

Google continues testing a native App Lock feature for Android 17 development builds, potentially giving users a consistent way to secure individual applications behind a PIN, password or biometric authentication. Several manufacturers already offer proprietary versions, but implementing the feature at Android's base-system level could make behaviour more predictable across different devices.

Current testing allows multiple apps to be selected at once, useful for banking, private photographs, messaging or workplace tools on a phone that may occasionally be handed to another person. Gaming accounts can benefit as well, particularly on family devices where users want to prevent children from opening titles containing purchases or deleting saved data.

The feature remains experimental and Google has not committed to a specific stable-release timetable, so the interface may change before reaching ordinary users. Native protection would reduce dependence on third-party locking applications that sometimes request broad permissions. As phones increasingly contain payment cards, identity credentials, health information and private work material, layered security becomes more useful than relying exclusively on the main lock screen.

App Lock is a comparatively small Android feature, but one with obvious everyday value.
