Fairphone is preparing a new generation of wireless earbuds, with Fairbuds 2 expected during the fourth quarter of 2026 and more detailed information planned for October. The company already differentiates its current earbuds by making batteries in both the individual buds and charging case replaceable, a feature almost unheard of in mainstream true-wireless audio.
Conventional earbuds are particularly problematic from an electronic-waste perspective because the tiny sealed batteries gradually degrade while the speakers and wireless hardware may still function perfectly. Fairphone's approach treats battery wear as a repair rather than an automatic replacement cycle. The company has not yet published the complete Fairbuds 2 specification sheet, so claims around codecs, noise cancellation or battery endurance should wait for the October reveal.
The upcoming model is nevertheless relevant to the wider mobile-hardware industry because right-to-repair principles are beginning to extend beyond phones and laptops into accessories that have historically been considered disposable. If Fairphone can combine genuinely good audio and modern ANC with modular batteries, Fairbuds 2 could make repairability part of the buying decision rather than simply an environmental niche.
