Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL introduce HiLight, one of Google's most immediately recognisable hardware additions this generation. The system uses illuminated elements around the rear camera area to provide glanceable notifications when the handset is face-down. Dedicated notification LEDs were once a normal Android feature but largely disappeared as manufacturers reduced bezels and adopted always-on displays. HiLight effectively revives the same idea in a far more visually prominent form.

Google can use different colours and effects to communicate alerts and AI interactions without requiring the user to wake the screen. Whether it becomes genuinely useful will depend on how granular the controls are and whether users can prevent the lighting from becoming distracting. The Pro phones also receive brighter displays, upgraded cameras and Tensor G6, but HiLight gives them a piece of identity that is obvious without opening an application.

With retail availability beginning August 20, the first large wave of owners will soon establish whether the system becomes a practical daily feature or simply one of those clever launch ideas that users disable after a few weeks.
