Apple has announced another major change to its European Union App Store terms, reducing the core technology commission associated with digital transactions through alternative app marketplaces and web distribution to 5 percent from October 1. The new structure replaces a more complicated system of initial acquisition and store-services fees as Apple continues adjusting its rules under the European Union's Digital Markets Act.
Apps distributed through Apple's own App Store but using alternative payment processing will still face a 20 percent commission, falling to 10 percent for eligible developers in Apple's small-business programme. The European Commission has welcomed the changes while saying implementation will continue to be monitored. Epic Games remains sharply critical and argues that charging developers for transactions occurring through competing stores still undermines the intended competition of the DMA.
For mobile-game publishers, the details matter because European players represent a substantial part of global spending. A five-percent fee creates very different economics from Apple's traditional commissions and may make third-party marketplaces more commercially attractive. The next question is whether enough consumers actually adopt alternative stores for developers to justify maintaining separate distribution and payment infrastructure.
