HONOR's Robot Phone is now in its first few days of Chinese retail availability after sales began on August 18. The device starts at RMB 9,999 and places a motorised three-axis gimbal directly into the smartphone body. A 200MP camera can physically extend and move to follow subjects, stabilise footage and automate framing. HONOR has also collaborated with ARRI on colour and imaging tools aimed at video creators.
Underneath the unusual mechanical hardware sits Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a 7,060mAh battery with very fast charging. The compromises are obvious: moving parts add weight, mechanical complexity and potential durability concerns compared with a sealed conventional phone. Yet the Robot Phone is important precisely because it represents physical experimentation at a time when many flagship launches consist mainly of faster chips and additional AI software.
No comparable international release has been confirmed. Chinese sales will now provide the first meaningful indication of whether consumers see the articulating camera as genuinely useful or simply an impressive engineering demonstration.
