HONOR's Robot Phone is approaching its first retail weekend in China after sales began on August 18. The unusual flagship starts at RMB 9,999 and incorporates a mechanically articulated three-axis gimbal carrying a 200MP camera. The module can physically move to stabilise video, track subjects and automate framing rather than relying entirely on electronic cropping. HONOR has also partnered with ARRI on colour and imaging tools aimed at serious video creators.
Underneath the moving camera sits Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a 7,060mAh battery with very fast charging. The design creates obvious compromises: moving components increase weight and mechanical complexity while making conventional waterproofing more difficult. Yet the product is important precisely because it represents genuine physical experimentation at a time when many smartphone launches focus overwhelmingly on software AI.
Chinese retail feedback will now show whether buyers consider the camera useful enough to justify flagship-plus pricing. No comparable worldwide availability has been confirmed, making the Robot Phone primarily a Chinese-market technology showcase for now.
