OwnPhone launches around a decentralised mobile-network concept based on Volla technology

Dutch company YourData Network is introducing the OwnPhone today, August 22, using hardware based on Germany's Volla Phone Quintus and software derived from Volla OS. The device is intended to operate as part of a broader decentralised infrastructure rather than depending entirely on conventional centralised cloud services.

Its Your OS platform integrates with a mesh-network concept designed around direct communication between devices and reduced reliance on central components such as traditional DNS infrastructure. Privacy-focused smartphones remain a niche compared with mainstream Android and iPhone hardware, but growing concern around data ownership has created room for alternatives including Volla, Murena and Fairphone. OwnPhone is particularly interesting because the hardware is only one part of a wider networking proposition.

The real test will be whether users can gain meaningful privacy advantages without sacrificing compatibility and everyday usability. Alternative mobile platforms frequently struggle not because their privacy ideas are weak but because users still need banking, messaging, navigation and entertainment applications built around conventional ecosystems.
