Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold is shipping with a new multitasking system called App Handles, giving the larger internal display a more practical way to move between applications and create split-screen combinations. The feature had previously appeared in Android development builds but is now reaching consumers on Google’s newest foldable hardware.
Foldables have always faced a software problem: opening the device gives users far more screen area, but simply stretching a normal phone application across it does not automatically make that space useful. App Handles aims to reduce the friction involved in launching a second application and arranging windows side by side. That could make the Fold significantly better for messaging while browsing, copying information between apps or keeping a video visible beside another task.
The feature also demonstrates why Google’s own foldable matters even if its sales remain small compared with conventional Pixels. The device gives Android engineers a reference platform for large-screen ideas that can later spread across tablets and other foldables. Good multitasking software may ultimately matter more to the category than another millimetre reduction in hinge thickness.
