Fairphone’s Gen 6+ has reached the US market at around $649, giving American consumers unusually straightforward access to a smartphone designed around repairability rather than planned replacement. The device uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but its most distinctive specifications are physical rather than computational. Numerous components are designed to be replaced individually, including the battery and other high-wear parts, using ordinary tools.
Fairphone combines that modular approach with a five-year warranty and software support extending into the next decade. It will not beat dedicated gaming phones in benchmark charts, but that is almost beside the point. A replaceable battery could make the device more useful after five years than a theoretically faster flagship whose sealed cell has degraded substantially. The US launch also tests whether sustainability can sell as a practical consumer benefit instead of an ethical abstraction.
Fairphone remains tiny compared with Apple or Samsung, yet mainstream availability gives buyers a genuine alternative to the increasingly disposable construction of modern premium phones.
