Some Android users, particularly people moving between Samsung Galaxy devices and other phones, are encountering a Google Messages RCS registration problem associated with a 3100 error. Rich Communication Services is intended to replace the limitations of traditional SMS with typing indicators, higher-quality media, read receipts and modern group messaging. When registration fails, however, the experience can become more confusing than the simple technology it replaces.

Phone switching is one of the hardest moments for any messaging platform because old devices, carrier systems and account credentials can remain associated with the same number. Google has made enormous progress in standardising RCS across Android, and Apple’s adoption has improved cross-platform messaging as well, but errors like this demonstrate that the backend remains complex. Users affected by the issue may temporarily fall back to SMS while troubleshooting registration.

The incident is not evidence that RCS as a whole is failing, but seamless migration is crucial if Google wants users to treat Messages as infrastructure that simply works regardless of which Android manufacturer they choose next.
