Fairphone's Gen 6+ is receiving renewed attention today as the Dutch company makes a serious push into the United States with a roughly smartphone designed to be repaired rather than discarded. The device uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, 12GB of RAM and a 120Hz OLED display, but the most important specifications are the replaceable components. Owners can swap parts such as the battery, screen and USB-C connector with ordinary tools instead of treating damage as a reason to replace the entire phone.

Fairphone backs that philosophy with a five-year warranty and software support promised into 2033. Raw performance remains mid-range, and reviews note that camera performance, battery endurance and water resistance cannot match the strongest premium rivals. Yet that comparison partly misses the point. A phone that remains economically repairable after five or six years is offering a different kind of performance metric.

Fairphone's US availability also gives consumers a rare opportunity to vote with their wallet for modularity. The question is whether enough buyers value repair costs several years from now as much as benchmark scores today.
