Samsung Display's stretchable OLED shows where screens could go after foldables

Samsung Display has used the IMID 2026 technology showcase in Busan to demonstrate next-generation OLED concepts including a large stretchable panel. Unlike today's foldables, which bend around engineered hinges, a stretchable display can physically deform across a broader portion of its surface. That raises possibilities for irregular device shapes, automotive interfaces, wearables and screens that physically react to content.

Samsung Display and LG Display also demonstrated other advanced OLED manufacturing and wide-view technologies at the event. None of this means a stretchable Galaxy phone is about to appear in shops. Display prototypes often spend years in laboratories and exhibitions before production yields, durability and cost become commercially viable. Foldable phones followed exactly that trajectory. For mobile hardware, durability remains the main challenge.

A screen that repeatedly stretches must keep pixels, touch sensors, protective layers and electrical connections working after thousands of deformations. Manufacturers also need genuine use cases rather than novelty. Even so, these demonstrations matter because they reveal what the display supply chain believes may eventually be manufacturable. Today's folding phones are unlikely to be the final form of flexible computing.
