Google's Pixel Watch 5 expands gesture control with a customisable double-pinch action, letting wearers trigger tasks without touching the display. Depending on configuration and context, the gesture can dismiss alarms, control media or perform other common interactions. The idea solves a genuine smartwatch problem: watches are supposed to be convenient, yet operating one often requires both hands. That becomes awkward while cooking, exercising, carrying bags or commuting.
Finger gestures use sensors to interpret subtle movement in the hand wearing the watch, effectively turning that hand itself into an input device. Apple and Samsung have explored similar ideas, suggesting gesture control is developing into a standard wearable interface rather than a novelty. Reliability is crucial. A gesture that succeeds most of the time but occasionally ignores the user can quickly become more irritating than tapping the screen.
Customisation helps because people can assign the gesture only to tasks where it is genuinely useful. Pixel Watch 5's implementation is therefore less about showing off sensor technology and more about reducing the number of moments when a smartwatch demands unnecessary physical attention.
