Sony is unveiling the Xperia 10 VIII today, continuing its increasingly unusual commitment to straightforward mid-range Android phones with features other manufacturers have abandoned. Pre-launch information points toward Qualcomm's Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, 8GB of RAM and a design closely related to the Xperia 10 VII. More importantly for Sony loyalists, the phone is expected to retain both microSD expansion and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Those specifications would have sounded ordinary several years ago but are now genuine differentiators. Sony's mobile business is tiny beside Apple, Samsung and leading Chinese manufacturers, so the Xperia line cannot realistically compete on scale. Instead, the company continues serving users who value expandable storage, wired audio and relatively restrained software. That strategy will only work if pricing remains sensible.
Mid-range Android competition is ferocious, and devices from Xiaomi, Nothing, Motorola and Realme frequently offer faster processors or larger batteries for less money. Xperia 10 VIII therefore needs to turn its conservative philosophy into a selling point rather than allowing it to look simply underpowered.
