Walmart's move toward Google Pay removes one of America's biggest contactless-payment holdouts

Walmart is moving toward support for Google Pay contactless transactions in US stores, ending one of the most conspicuous gaps in America's mobile-payment landscape. The retailer historically promoted Walmart Pay, requiring customers to open its application and scan a code rather than simply tapping a phone at the terminal. Supporting Google's wallet removes that extra friction and brings Walmart closer to the experience consumers increasingly expect elsewhere.

The significance extends beyond one retailer because Walmart's enormous store network can normalize behavior across the wider market. Android phones have supported NFC payments for years, yet merchant adoption in the United States has remained less consistent than in many European and Asian countries where contactless cards became standard much earlier. Google Pay support also benefits Wear OS users, who can complete compatible transactions directly from a watch.

Proprietary retailer payment systems once appeared strategically valuable because they kept customers inside branded apps. Consumer expectations now seem to be winning instead: people increasingly want the wallet already configured on their phone to work everywhere.
