GrapheneOS confirms Motorola expansion with foldables planned for 2027

Privacy-focused Android distribution GrapheneOS is preparing to expand beyond Google's Pixel hardware with official support for future Motorola devices beginning in 2027. Planned compatibility includes high-end conventional smartphones and later Motorola's Razr Fold and Razr Ultra, potentially giving GrapheneOS its first officially supported flip-style foldable.

The development is significant because GrapheneOS has historically depended on Pixel devices to meet stringent requirements around verified boot, hardware-backed security and long firmware support. Motorola is reportedly cooperating directly with the project, while upcoming Qualcomm platforms should provide security features closer to what GrapheneOS requires. The partnership could make privacy-oriented Android more accessible to users who want alternatives to Google's hardware.

There is still an important caveat: Motorola's software-support commitments have historically varied considerably across price tiers. Secure alternative operating systems cannot maintain a device after the manufacturer stops delivering essential firmware. The project therefore represents both a technical expansion and pressure on Motorola to improve long-term support.
