NCSOFT is expanding the role of its Mobile Casual Division beyond investing in and supporting affiliated studios, with plans to publish games from third-party developers. Division head Anel Ceman discussed the strategy during Gamescom, indicating that additional publishing announcements could arrive within the next month or two.
The shift is significant because NCSOFT remains most closely associated internationally with large MMORPGs, yet the company increasingly sees casual mobile games as a separate growth engine. Publishing external developers gives it access to a broader pipeline without requiring every project to originate inside an owned studio. For smaller teams, NCSOFT can provide user acquisition, analytics, platform relationships and global publishing infrastructure that would be expensive to build independently.
The challenge is cultural as much as financial. Casual games often require rapid iteration, extensive advertising testing and very different live-operations expertise from MMORPGs. NCSOFT's willingness to broaden its portfolio illustrates how even publishers built around hardcore PC and mobile audiences are looking for diversification as development costs rise.
