New industry data underlines just how difficult the mobile games market has become for developers attempting to launch new titles. A report highlighted by PocketGamer.biz says roughly 190,000 mobile games were released during 2025, yet only around 2,500 surpassed 500,000 downloads during their first year. That means an enormous majority of releases never achieve meaningful scale, despite app stores theoretically giving developers access to billions of devices.
The figures help explain several current industry trends: publishers are investing more heavily in recognizable intellectual property, developers are building communities before launch, direct-to-consumer stores are becoming important and cross-platform releases increasingly arrive on mobile alongside PC and consoles. Discoverability is now arguably a larger obstacle than technical distribution. Simply placing a game on the App Store or Google Play no longer guarantees that even interested players will find it.
For independent developers, the result is a difficult trade-off between spending heavily on user acquisition and designing games capable of generating organic social attention. The numbers make this week's crowded Gamescom mobile announcements look even more competitive.
