Hisense A10 puts E Ink back on the smartphone agenda

Hisense's A10 is scheduled to launch in China on August 28, bringing renewed attention to one of the smartphone market's most unusual niches: phones built around E Ink technology. Pre-launch images have shown the device alongside a detachable secondary display concept, reinforcing Hisense's long-running experimentation with reading-focused mobile hardware.

E Ink phones appeal to a specific audience because their displays are comfortable for prolonged reading, highly visible outdoors and far less power-hungry than conventional OLED panels. The trade-off is equally clear: refresh rates and color reproduction make them poorly suited to video, fast games and many conventional smartphone tasks. Hisense has nevertheless continued exploring the category while most major manufacturers abandoned it.

The A10 arrives at an interesting moment as consumers show renewed interest in distraction-reducing devices and dedicated reading hardware. Rather than attempting to outperform mainstream flagships, Hisense can target people who consider conventional smartphone displays part of the problem. Actual pricing and broader international availability will determine how far beyond that niche the device can travel.
