HID makes it easier for businesses to replace physical access cards with phones

HID has introduced software updates designed to accelerate the transition from physical workplace access cards to smartphone-based credentials. The changes are intended to let organizations upgrade existing systems without necessarily replacing compatible hardware or performing labor-intensive manual firmware work. Mobile access has grown rapidly because employees already carry secure devices capable of biometric authentication, encrypted credential storage and remote provisioning.

For businesses, replacing a lost digital credential can also be considerably easier than issuing and tracking another physical card. The challenge is interoperability. Corporate access systems often remain installed for many years, meaning new mobile credentials have to coexist with older readers and security policies. HID's latest software approach is intended to reduce that friction.

The development belongs to the wider mobile ecosystem rather than conventional consumer hardware, but it demonstrates how smartphones continue absorbing functions once handled by dedicated physical objects. Payments, transport tickets, hotel keys and car keys have already moved in the same direction. Workplace identity is increasingly becoming another service inside the phone.
