This week's Gamescom announcements arrive against a sobering backdrop for mobile developers. Industry data indicating that only around 2,500 of approximately 190,000 mobile games released in 2025 exceeded 500,000 first-year downloads illustrates how difficult organic discovery has become. That imbalance helps explain why today's mobile launches look increasingly different from those of a decade ago.
Publishers reveal projects months or years in advance, open pre-registration early, cultivate Discord communities, use PC and console versions to generate awareness and increasingly rely on recognizable franchises. Monster Hunter Outlanders, Aniimo and ANANTA all exemplify the cross-platform approach. Smaller games have to find different advantages: unusual mechanics, viral presentation or highly specific communities.
App-store optimization alone cannot solve a market where thousands of new products appear every week. The most important consequence may be creative rather than financial. When visibility is scarce, developers face pressure to make concepts understandable almost instantly. Games that cannot explain their appeal in a screenshot, short video or creator clip face a much steeper climb regardless of underlying quality.
