PocketBook Q bets that some readers want a genuinely pocketable E Ink device

PocketBook has revealed the PocketBook Q, a compact e-reader built around a 5.84-inch E Ink screen. The device is expected to receive a fuller showcase at IFA in Berlin and deliberately moves against the industry's trend toward larger reading tablets. PocketBook is instead emphasizing portability, long battery life and distraction-free reading. The concept sits somewhere between a conventional Kindle and an E Ink smartphone.

Most people already carry a phone capable of displaying books, but OLED screens, notifications and relatively heavy power consumption can make dedicated reading less comfortable. E Ink remains highly visible outdoors and can operate for weeks between charges under light use. The question is whether consumers see enough value in carrying another small device. Pricing will be crucial: if the Q approaches the cost of larger mainstream e-readers, its limited screen space may feel like a compromise.

If PocketBook prices it aggressively, genuine pocketability could become an advantage. The product reflects renewed interest in electronics designed to do one thing well rather than everything at once.
