Android 17 makes switching from iPhone more comprehensive

Android 17 is improving Google's Android Switch process with broader support for information that users need when leaving an iPhone. The updated migration experience is designed to move more than conventional photos and contacts, extending the transfer process to items such as passwords, passkeys, eSIM information and applications where supported. Reducing switching friction is strategically important because ecosystem lock-in increasingly matters as much as smartphone hardware.

A consumer may like a new Android device but hesitate to change platforms if years of credentials, subscriptions and configuration have to be recreated manually. Password and passkey migration is particularly valuable because authentication has become one of the least visible but most important parts of modern smartphone ownership. Apple and Google both benefit when moving into their ecosystems is easier than moving out, so migration tools have gradually become a competitive feature.

Android 17's improvements will not make every service perfectly transferable, especially where third-party applications maintain proprietary data, but they address one of the most practical reasons users postpone switching platforms.
