Xiaomi tests a smart privacy display system for future phones

Xiaomi is reportedly testing a smart display-privacy system inside HyperOS designed to reduce what people standing beside a user can see on the screen. Privacy displays traditionally rely on physical filters that narrow viewing angles all the time, which can reduce brightness and make normal sharing inconvenient. A software-controlled approach could theoretically activate protection only when needed, perhaps using context or sensors to determine when shoulder-surfing is a risk.

The concept arrives shortly after Samsung made screen privacy a major flagship talking point, suggesting that display confidentiality could become another competitive smartphone feature alongside camera processing and AI assistants. The usefulness is obvious for commuters, business travelers and anyone handling sensitive messages or financial information in public. Implementation will determine whether the technology becomes genuinely valuable or another setting users disable.

Automatic systems need to avoid unexpectedly dimming or distorting the display when someone intentionally wants to show another person a photo or video. Xiaomi has not formally announced a consumer device using the feature, so its appearance in testing should be treated as development work rather than a confirmed launch specification.
