Privacy-focused Android project GrapheneOS is preparing to expand beyond Google Pixel devices, with official Motorola support planned from 2027. Initial compatibility is expected to focus on premium Motorola slab phones before expanding to foldables including future Razr models. The change is significant because GrapheneOS has historically required unusually strict security capabilities including verified boot, strong hardware-backed protections and reliable long-term firmware updates.

Pixel phones were effectively the only mainstream devices consistently meeting those requirements. Cooperation from Motorola could therefore give privacy-conscious users genuine hardware choice for the first time. GrapheneOS has emphasized that manufacturer participation matters because an alternative operating system cannot independently maintain modem firmware, secure elements or processor-level security. Motorola will need to sustain strong patch commitments for the relationship to succeed.

The partnership also comes as on-device AI and cloud assistants increase consumer interest in controlling how personal information is processed. GrapheneOS remains a specialist platform, but broadening hardware support could make privacy-focused Android considerably more accessible.
