Pokémon GO begins its Mega Ascension event today, August 31, starting a five-day programme of Mega Raids, boosted wild encounters and branching Timed Research. The event runs until September 4 and serves as a lead-in to Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale. Different Mega-Evolved Pokémon rotate through raids each day, while Mega Latias and Mega Latios remain available throughout the event.

Niantic is also increasing the Remote Raid Pass limit and introducing Mega Evolution-themed Special Backgrounds on Pokémon caught from eligible raids. That combination makes Mega Ascension more than another collection event because it creates reasons for both remote and local players to engage daily rather than completing everything in a single session.

Pokémon GO has spent years refining this event-driven structure, using short windows to concentrate activity and make older mechanics feel temporarily important again. Mega Evolution has undergone several revisions since its introduction, and the current event demonstrates how deeply it is now integrated into progression, raids and collection rather than functioning as a standalone feature.
