Samsung gives Bixby gesture wake-up and built-in phone diagnostics in One UI 9 beta

Samsung's latest One UI 9 beta introduces several Bixby upgrades that substantially change how the assistant can be used. A new gesture wake-up mode can activate Bixby when the phone is raised near the user's mouth, eliminating the need to say a wake phrase. Samsung has also added conversational diagnostics, allowing owners to describe problems such as overheating, low call volume or Bluetooth failures and be directed toward relevant troubleshooting tools.

Interpreter functionality is being integrated more directly into Bixby, while new widgets provide faster access to text commands. The additions matter because voice assistants are being forced to redefine themselves in the generative-AI era. Bixby cannot compete simply by setting timers and opening applications when Galaxy phones also provide access to advanced AI models. Device-specific tasks remain one area where Samsung has an advantage because it controls the operating system layer and hardware diagnostics.

Turning Bixby into a deeper Galaxy control interface may therefore be more useful than trying to imitate a general-purpose chatbot.
