Huawei has scheduled a major China launch event for September 7 centred on HarmonyOS 7 and the Mate XT 2, its next-generation tri-fold smartphone. The company remains the industry's most committed manufacturer in the tri-fold category, where engineering complexity and cost have kept most rivals on the sidelines. Early information suggests the Mate XT 2 will adopt an inward-folding U-shaped design with a cover display rather than simply repeating the original zig-zag structure.
Reports also point toward a Kirin 9050 Pro chipset and a battery exceeding 6,000mAh, although those specifications should remain provisional until Huawei's announcement. The software side may prove equally important. HarmonyOS has become central to Huawei's strategy in China as the company reduces dependence on Android-derived components and builds its own application ecosystem. A tri-fold gives Huawei a spectacular demonstration platform for multitasking and adaptive interfaces.
The challenge remains turning an engineering showcase into a device durable and affordable enough for more than a tiny enthusiast audience.
