Android 17 QPR2 beta adds native status-bar customization

Google's Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 introduces a dedicated status-bar customization menu, giving users greater control over which notification and system indicators appear at the top of the display. Android enthusiasts have historically relied on hidden settings, manufacturer skins or third-party tools to remove unwanted icons. Native control therefore represents a small but meaningful improvement, particularly as modern phones accumulate indicators for VPNs, privacy status, connectivity and other system services.

The feature reflects a broader trend in Android 17 toward giving users more granular control without requiring developer-level modifications. Beta software remains unfinished, so menu organization and available icon categories could still change before final release. The significance goes beyond cosmetic tidiness. Status bars occupy limited space, especially on phones with large camera cutouts or compact displays, and unnecessary indicators can make important alerts harder to distinguish.

If Google keeps the feature in the stable QPR release, manufacturers may no longer need to build their own inconsistent implementations of the same basic customization.
