GrapheneOS may skip Pixel 11 entirely after Google removes hardware memory tagging

GrapheneOS has warned that it may not support Google's new Pixel 11 generation after discovering that the phones no longer provide the hardware Memory Tagging Extension relied upon by the security-focused operating system. The project says it managed to create a partial port but cannot meet its normal security model without MTE, which helps detect dangerous memory-safety errors.

Pixel devices have historically been GrapheneOS's only officially supported hardware, making the development unusually significant for privacy-focused Android users. The team is now actively directing attention toward planned Motorola support beginning in 2027. Google has added other security features to Pixel 11, but GrapheneOS argues that they do not compensate for losing memory tagging.

The disagreement highlights an important reality: alternative operating systems depend heavily on decisions made by hardware vendors. Strong privacy software cannot recreate processor capabilities that no longer exist. For buyers who specifically want GrapheneOS, the newest Pixel may therefore no longer be the automatic choice it once was.
