A new Subway Surfers-related project called Hoverboard Party is currently testing on iOS and Android in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Italy and Portugal. The game appears under an account associated with Miniclip-owned SYBO and uses characters and visual elements from the enormously successful Subway Surfers universe. Instead of another endless runner, the test features a collection of party-style minigames including Cage Football, Crossy Rails, Hoverboard Mayhem and Snowball Fight. The move makes commercial sense.
Subway Surfers has built one of mobile gaming's most recognizable character brands, but the core game remains closely associated with a single running mechanic. A party format could broaden the franchise without forcing SYBO to replace or radically change its established hit. Multiplayer minigames also lend themselves naturally to short sessions and social competition.
The main challenge is ensuring that players return because the individual games are genuinely enjoyable rather than because they recognize the characters. Soft launch provides Miniclip and SYBO with an opportunity to determine which activities generate repeat play before deciding whether Hoverboard Party deserves a wider release.
