China's CXMT has begun mass production of LPDDR6 mobile memory and will supply the technology for Xiaomi's upcoming 18 Fold, due later in September. Xiaomi has also confirmed that the foldable will pair the memory with its internally designed 3nm Xring O3 processor. The combination makes the device unusually important beyond normal smartphone specifications.
LPDDR6 offers increased bandwidth needed for demanding mobile gaming, camera pipelines and increasingly large on-device AI models, while Xiaomi's custom processor reduces its dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek. CXMT's involvement is equally significant because Samsung and SK Hynix have traditionally dominated advanced mobile DRAM. Producing competitive LPDDR6 narrows one of the most important technology gaps in China's semiconductor industry.
Foldables create a difficult first showcase because their thin bodies limit cooling space even while large screens encourage multitasking and gaming. The Xiaomi 18 Fold will therefore provide a highly visible test of CXMT's memory, Xiaomi's silicon and the broader effort to build a more domestically controlled Chinese mobile supply chain.
