Garena's open-world action project Free City continues broadening its mobile testing footprint after originally appearing in Argentina. Download activity has now been observed in the Philippines and several additional markets, suggesting the Free Fire publisher is collecting data across a wider mix of devices and networks. Free City moves Garena into GTA-like urban action, combining vehicles, exploration and crime-themed missions inside a persistent city environment.

That is substantially different from operating a match-based battle royale. Large open worlds require more sophisticated NPC behaviour, traffic systems, mission scripting and streaming technology, all of which need to work on midrange Android devices if Garena wants the title to reach the kind of mass-market audience Free Fire enjoys. Competition is also increasing, with Gangstar Mirage City and other projects targeting similar players.

Garena's strongest advantage is its experience operating huge live-service communities in emerging markets. If Free City can deliver an open world that performs reliably on relatively modest hardware, it could become one of the most strategically important mobile releases in the company's history.
