Google officially rolls out custom Chat Themes in Messages

Google Messages is officially adding customizable Chat Themes through the September Android Drop after the feature began appearing for some users in advance. Conversations can now use wallpapers or personal photos, with message bubbles automatically adapting their colours to match. The change is visually simple but strategically important because messaging applications increasingly compete on personalization as much as core functionality.

Apple's Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram and numerous regional services already offer various forms of customization, and Google has historically kept its messaging interface relatively restrained. RCS interoperability means Google Messages now handles a much larger portion of everyday cross-platform communication, creating more incentive to make chats feel personal. Themes also demonstrate how Messages is turning into a continuously updated service rather than merely a front end for carrier messaging.

Google can deploy UI changes independently of annual Android versions. The feature is part of the same September package that introduces Keep collaboration and accessibility improvements, making this one of the more substantial Messages updates of the year.
