Android Motion Assist targets motion sickness in moving vehicles

Google's Motion Assist is rolling out more broadly through the September Android Drop after first appearing on Android 17 devices. The feature displays moving visual cues around the edge of the screen that correspond with the motion of a vehicle, helping reduce the sensory conflict that can cause nausea when reading or using a phone in a car. Apple introduced a similar concept on iPhone, and Google's wider rollout shows how quickly useful accessibility and comfort features can cross ecosystem boundaries.

Motion Assist is particularly relevant as smartphones become places where users work, read and watch video during commutes. The system is not intended as a medical treatment, but relatively simple visual cues can make device use more comfortable for people who are sensitive to motion. Google says the feature is not limited solely to Pixel phones, meaning compatible Android 17 devices from other manufacturers should eventually receive access.

That makes Motion Assist another example of Google using system-level Android components to standardize functionality across brands.
